چکیده

Distributed computing systems consist of computers interconnected by communications links. In such systems, statistical fluctuations in job arrival and service patterns cause episodes of load imbalance during which some computers are lightly loaded while others are simultaneously overloaded. Load sharing is the process of transferring jobs from overloaded to underloaded computers to improve overall system performance. Load sharing is implemented by means of load sharing algorithms . However, since little has been known about the temporal characteristics of load imbalance, various pitfalls arise in the operation of load sharing algorithms which prevent full realization of the potential benefits of load sharing. In this paper, we present a stochastic analysis of time durations of load imbalance. The notions of Transfer Pair , and Load Sharing Window are introduced. Using first passage times, a general expression for the probability distribution function of the Load Sharing Window is derived. A class of rules, called quantile rules, is introduced. Their role in avoiding unproductive job redistribution as well as to make bulk job transfers, is explained. The general technique is applied to the specific case of a distributed computing system consisting of M/M/1 queues. For this case, an expression for the mean of the Load Sharing Window is derived. Numerical computations, in the form of graphs, are presented, and their significance discussed.

Distributed Dynamic Channel Allocation for Mobile Computing: Lessons from Load Sharing in Distributed Systems

Mobile computers use wireless channels to communicate with other computers. Ef-cient channel allocation is at the heart of the design of an eecient mobile computing system. The nite number of channels should be eeciently allocated to maximize throughput and avoid co-channel interference. Temporal variations in channel demand require channel allocation to adapt dynamically to the changing demand...

A Grid-Connected PV Inverter with Compensation of Load Active and Reactive Power Imbalance for Distribution Networks

Load balancing is an important issue in distributed systems. In addition, using distributed generation sources such as photovoltaic is increasing. Power electronic converters are main interfaces between the sources and the grid. In this paper, a method has been proposed to reduce the load imbalancing in distribution networks using PV Grid Interface Converter. Two DC/DC and DC/AC converters have...

Rebalancing the Load in Distributed File Systems

Distributed file systems are key building blocks for cloud computing applications supported the Map Reduce programming paradigm. In such file systems, nodes at the same time serve computing and storage functions; a file is partitioned off into variety of chunks allotted in distinct nodes so Map Reduce tasks are often performed in parallel over the nodes. However, in a cloud computing setting, f...

Analysis of Dynamic Load Balancing Strategies Using a Combination of Stochastic Petri Nets and Queueing Networks

This paper is concerned with the analytical evaluation of two well known dynamic load balancing strategies, namely, shortest queue routing (SQR) and shortest expected delay routing (SEDR). We overcome the limitations of existing analysis methodologies, using a well known hybrid performance model that combines generalized stochastic Petri nets and product form queueing networks. Our methodology ...
